Help

Short, straight answers. If yours isn't here, write to us and a person will reply.

Getting started

Do I need my phone number to sign up?

No. Sign up with an email address, with Apple or with Google. We never ask for your existing number.

How do I get a number?

After you sign up, pick an area code in the US or Canada, or search for digits you like, and confirm. Each account, and each phone, can hold one free number. Most numbers are ready straight away. On some phones a free number needs a few days of use first: the app tells you the date it will be ready, and you can pay for a number if you need one sooner.

Why does the app ask for notifications, contacts and the microphone?

Notifications let your second number ring and show new texts. Contacts let the app show names instead of numbers. The microphone is used only during calls and when you record a voice message or a greeting. Each one is optional: tap Not now and the app still works, with that feature off until you allow it in your phone's settings.

Can I use it on my computer?

Yes. Open web.2ndphoneline.com in a browser. On your phone, go to Settings, then Linked devices, then Link a device, and point the phone at the code on the screen. You can text, call, play voicemail and manage contacts in the browser.

Your number

How long do I keep my number?

A free number stays yours as long as you open the app at least once every 90 days. If you don't, we remind you three times, then hold the number 30 more days so you can reclaim it. A number that is never used is released after 30 days.

Lock, Plus and Premium Number keep your number for as long as you subscribe, even if you don't open the app. The exact rules are in the Terms of Service.

Can I change my number?

Yes, from the number's settings in the app. On the free plan you can change it once every 30 days.

Will my number work for verification codes?

Sometimes. It's an internet (VoIP) number, and some banks and apps don't send codes to those. We never promise a code will arrive, so for an account you can't afford to lose, add a recovery option you can always reach.

How do I port out my number to another carrier?

Your new carrier needs your account number and a transfer PIN. Email hello@2ndphoneline.com from the address you sign in with and we send you both. Give them to the new carrier and it starts the transfer. We don't block a valid request.

When the transfer completes, the number leaves HopSlide. Texts and voicemail you already have stay in the app until you delete them. Moving a number from another carrier into HopSlide isn't offered.

What happens when I release a number?

The app tells you what you lose before you confirm. A number that was used stays unassigned for 90 days, so nobody else gets your texts or codes in that time.

Texts

Why didn't my text send?

The reason shows under the message. The usual ones: the person replied STOP to your number (they can reply START to hear from you again), you reached a fair-use limit (the app shows when it resets), or the other person's network refused it.

A text that fails never costs anything.

What do the ticks mean?

A clock means the message is still on its way. One tick means it was sent, and two mean it was delivered. Texts have no read receipts, so there is no “read” tick.

Someone texts me from a HopSlide number and I want it to stop

Reply STOP to that number. You get one confirmation, and it can't text you again unless you reply START. See the SMS program terms.

Calls and voicemail

Can I call 911?

HopSlide can't call 911. If you dial an emergency number in the app, your phone's own dialer opens instead. 911 isn't available on the web.

My second number doesn't ring

Check that notifications are allowed for HopSlide, that Do Not Disturb and quiet hours are off for that number, and that your phone is online. Calls need Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Are calls and texts really unlimited?

Yes, for everyday use. Every plan includes unlimited US and Canada calls and texts, plus calls to Mexico, and incoming calls never count. To keep the service fair there is a fair-use limit, and most people never get near it. If you do, the app tells you once when calls are back, and offers Plus if you're on Free. Calls at home never use your international credit.

Can I record calls?

No. HopSlide does not record calls.

Billing and international credit

How do I cancel a subscription?

On iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, HopSlide. On Android: Google Play, your profile picture, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions. The Manage subscription button in the app opens the same page.

Cancel at least a day before your plan renews to skip the next charge. You keep it until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it.

How do I get a refund?

Apple and Google handle refunds for purchases made in their stores: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, or from your order history in Google Play. International credit for a text that failed or a call that didn't connect comes back automatically.

I changed phones. How do I get my purchases back?

Sign in with the same account, then tap Restore purchases in the app.

When is international credit used?

Only for calls outside the US, Canada and Mexico and texts outside the US and Canada, and only when a text is sent or a call connects. Calls are charged for the first minute, then by the second. Everyday calls and texts at home never use it.

Privacy and your account

How do I download my data?

In the app, go to Settings, then Privacy & security, then Export my data. We email you a download link.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Settings, then Privacy & security, then Delete account. No longer have the app? Use the account deletion page. Deleting destroys your data and releases your numbers, and it can't be undone.

Still stuck?
